An Audible Voice: “God, Is That You?”
Ah yes, the VOICE of God… Making so many cameos in movies, TV shows, comedy sketches, cartoons and songs (disclaimer: duh, I know that wasn’t God on that episode of Looney Tunes). But, what is the Voice of God? Is it real? Does it actually happen to people? And will “I” ever hear it?
One of my great mentors, Kenneth Hagin, has not only heard the audible voice of Jesus, but he actually, seen Him… SEVERAL times.
Paul! The man who wrote a big chunk of the New Testament, was once known as Saul – a tyrannical persecutor of the church, yet, he got to hear the voice… Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” Acts 9:4. Now wouldn’t that be something!? To see Jesus in front of you and hear his voice as he speaks with you.
So When Can I Hear It?
Well, some of us would settle for just hearing His voice. However, there will be a majority who will be born, live and die and never hear that voice. It is different for all of us. Jesus actually said to Thomas when he saw the Lord after the resurrection in John 20: 29 – Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”. There are many of us who might not see or hear him, till we head on up to Him.
Oh, how easy it would be if when we prayed that, “Lord give me a sign! Tell me exactly what to do” prayer, he would be like… “Aye, no bother. So, hang a left at the next junction and talk to the fella wearing the parka. He will give you your next job where you will make 6 figures”
“Awe, cheers Jesus.”
Yea right, I wish. It’s going to be more of an inward witness, a still quiet whisper that you feel down in your spirit that will lead you that way, but I’ll go into more detail on that in a later blog.
Wouldn’t that be Easier?
So why then? Why not lead us with that audible voice every time? Wouldn’t that be easier? Well… I don’t know the full answer to that question and I’m looking forward to finding out. However, I do believe that it is because the Lord wants us to trust the Holy Spirit’s pulling in us. Getting quiet before the Lord and waiting on Him to show us is going to not only build our relationship with the Lord, but also strengthen us spiritually. After all, we are in spiritual warfare so it would be pretty useful to have a bit of muscle in a fight.
Do not feel disheartened because you don’t hear His voice audibly. Don’t let the enemy make you feel inferior because you don’t know exactly what God wants you to do next. I am going to show you, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, exactly how you can be led by the Lord day in and day out.
Take this away with you:
- Only a super small percentage of people will hear the Lord’s audible voice.
- Like Jesus said to Thomas, we are blessed for believing even though we have not seen or heard.
- Like a song I listened in my scene days, “It’s not faith if you use your eyes.”
