God’s Will Talisman: Finding out God’s Will for Your Life
What is the Will of God?
Throughout my life I have heard people talk about “The will of God,” and that statement has so many meanings. Some years ago, I heard someone talking about the growth of a church and finished with “If God wills it” as a sort of good luck talisman, like God is sitting there like “Oh, that nice thing you want that benefits the kingdom and one of my children… HA! Denied!” But people say it all the time:
“God will heal me if it be his will…”
“I’ll be able to pay my rent… IF…. God allows it.”
God isn’t a referee at a football game deciding if there will be a touchdown or not. God wants everything you do to end in a touchdown! The will of God is so much more than an attachment at the end of your statement of hope to make you seem “Holy.”
The will of God is a call to arms. It’s God asking you to cast off your current self and be more. You’ll hear Christians say “God’s got a plan for your life.” Well, that’s the will of God. Does God want you to be healed? Aye he does! Does God want you to be able to pay rent? No Doubt! Romans 8:31 tells us that our God is for us! The odds are ever in our favor (not trying to quote hunger games).
How do you discover the Will of God?
“So Caleb, what is God’s will for my life?” Well, there are 2 places you’ll find that out… In the Bible, which is the very word of God where he tells us all he has for us both here on earth and in eternity. The other place you find out what God has planned for you is anywhere at all. Ask the Father, “Lord, what is your plan for my life?” He’ll show you. I’m not saying a massive scroll will fall down from heaven like some sort of Holy Walkthrough to a video game called “Your Life,” but he will show you.
When I asked God to show me what to do, I went a little OTT (Over the top for my pre technology friends). I thought I had to go on a 40-day fast and spend every second I could with him. Was it good I did that? Absolutely! My prayer every day was “Lord, open the door to what I’m supposed to do and when I take my fist step, grab me by the collar and pull me the rest of the way.”
I would talk with him as if he was sitting right next to me… Do you know why? Because He was and He Is. The Holy Spirit is jumping up and down waiting for you to talk to Him. How much more if it’s to talk about what he wants you to do?
So here is my advice to learning what God wants you to do:
- Read His word – In it you will find exactly what he has already said He wants to give you and bless you with.
- Talk to Him – I know it feels a little weird at first, but I promise you, he’ll respond. It may not be audibly, but He isn’t in the business of leaving you on hold.
