LUUUUUKE!: Potty Training Christians
We Are Kinda Like Puppies
I just got a 9-week-old little white lab puppy. I know you’ve already started laughing to yourself, “Oh Caleb… you have no idea what you’re in for” and my sleepless nights say you are right! However, this little pup, affectionately named Luke Skywalker McLaughlin (I know, I’m a geek, let’s move on), has been teaching me some valuable lessons and I wanted to share some of them with you guys.
Potty training Christians
I’ve been trying to potty train Luke. To my dismay, he seems to have gotten the order mixed up and prefers to go inside instead of outside. Whilst cleaning up his jobby (a fun Scottish word for poop), I asked God “Father, why can’t he just go outside. Why does he keep pooping in here!” I swear I felt like God looked down, laughed at me and said, “You poop too.” Now, He wasn’t referring to when I sit upon my own white throne. He was talking about when I make mistakes in my own life.
We do things we shouldn’t do as human beings. The bible calls it sinning. I jobby in my life all the time just like we all do, just like Luke does. We want to do the right thing, but sometimes we find ourselves walking around with our tails between our legs and our heads down feeling defeated and worthless just like a dog getting caught for expelling in the house.
Luke showed me what God probably feels like with us children every day “Guys, live clean… Like, for real!” God sent us out of His presence waaaaay back in Genesis because we couldn’t keep it clean. Remember? In Genesis 3 we hear about the “fall of man” where we get sent outside Eden. The Garden of Eden was a place where we had face-to-face fellowship with God the Father. We were in His presence, His house.
In the same respect, there are times when I have to pick up Luke and say “Outside! Now!” and bring him to some grass outside. Then, no matter how frustrated I get with him, I have no choice but to forgive him immediately and bring him back inside (I mean, how could you not? He is so freaking adorable!).
For us, bible scholars say roughly 4004 years passed before Jesus came to bring us, His children, back “inside”, back into God’s presence. What does that mean for us? Well, we have the awesome privilege of being able to spend time with God at any time and at any place! And what puppy doesn’t like to spend time with his mom or dad?
That sin you’ve committed, forgiven. The mistake you made those years ago that you still feel the weight of guilt for? Erased! That time you pooped on the carpet (figuratively hopefully lol) it’s been cleaned up! You don’t have to lump around outside like a punished dog anymore because Jesus has come and brought you back into His Home.
What do I do then Caleb?
I feel terrible! I keep making these mistakes!
1) Recognize you’ve sinned
2) Talk to the father about it (He’s listening)
3) Receive your forgiveness (Receive Jesus for who He is and what He did on the cross)
4) Walk free
